Smith Stearns Students Shine at State Championships

Some Smith Stearns students have come away winners at their various state championships this past week.

Click to View June 22, 2009 -- Molly O’Koniewski and Leyla Erkan both won their respective divisions at the South Carolina State Closed, formally titled the Wachovia Palmetto Championships in Belton, South Carolina. The event was held June 5th – June 12th, and is used as a qualifier into the Southern Closed Championship later this month.

O’Koniewski, 15, won the girl’s 18 and under event by handily taking down Alex Martin from Mount Pleasant, 6-3,6-0, to claim the title.

Erkan, 16, won the girl’s 16 and under title by defeating Megan Blevins from Charleston, by a score of 7-5, 6-1 in the championship match.

Kaitlyn Ray from Little Rock, Arkansas, also won her state championship in the girl’s 16 and under division. She only lost a total of six games en route to the Arkansas state title.

Other highlights include a second place finish by Austin Powell in the boy’s 18 and under division at the Alabama State Closed, a second place finish by Kendall Woodard at the Georgia State Closed in the girl’s 16’s, a fourth place finish by Michael Reilly at the North Carolina State Qualifier in the boy’s 16’s, and a fourth place finish by Samantha Light in the North Carolina Qualifier in the girl’s 16’s.

All students are currently gearing up for the Southern Closed Championships which is held June 20-27 at various sites across the south.
